Stripe
A payment processor with an API for taking card payments, subscriptions, and invoicing directly, where you remain the merchant of record.
What it actually does
Stripe lets you accept card and wallet payments through an API, a hosted Checkout page, or no-code Payment Links. On top of the core processing it sells add-on products: Billing for subscriptions and dunning, Invoicing, Tax for rate calculation, and Radar for fraud.
Because you are the merchant of record, Stripe moves the money and calculates tax where you are registered, but registering for VAT and sales tax and filing the returns is your responsibility. Stripe Tax and its Tax Complete filing plans reduce that work but do not remove the legal obligation.
It fits a solo founder who sells mainly into one country, wants the lowest per-transaction cost, and is comfortable owning compliance. Nearly every SaaS boilerplate and webhook library speaks Stripe first, so integration help is easy to find.

Pay less for it
4 ways foundPay only per successful transaction, so a pre-revenue project costs $0 to keep live
Above roughly $80k/mo in volume Stripe will negotiate lower blended rates than the 2.9% list price
Registered 501(c)(3) nonprofits whose volume is mostly tax-deductible donations can apply for a discounted 2.2% + $0.30 card rate
Enable Stripe Tax only where you are registered and avoid the 1% instant-payout fee to keep the effective rate near the headline
