Lemon Squeezy
A merchant of record aimed at indie makers that bundles checkout, license keys, and email marketing, now being folded into Stripe.
What it actually does
Lemon Squeezy is a merchant of record that handles global sales tax while giving indie makers a store with hosted checkout, license-key delivery, affiliates, and basic email marketing built in.
It has the friendliest setup of the merchant-of-record group for a first product, and payouts arrive semi-monthly. The base rate is 5% + $0.50, but surcharges stack: +1.5% international cards, +1.5% PayPal, and +0.5% on subscriptions.
Stripe acquired it in 2024 and the product is now in maintenance mode. The successor, Stripe Managed Payments, reached general availability in 2026 but prices differently: it charges 3.5% on top of standard Stripe fees, roughly 6.4% + $0.30 on a US card, and drops extras like affiliates and the storefront builder, so deep API builds carry migration risk.
