What it actually does
DigitalOcean rents flat-priced Droplets from $4/mo, with a large tutorial and documentation library plus managed databases and an App Platform PaaS when you outgrow raw servers. Transfer pools across Droplets and overage is only about $0.01/GB.
It suits founders who want US regions and mature tooling and will trade some price-performance for it: $4 buys 512 MB RAM versus Hetzner's 4 GB for ~$5, and 512 MB is too small for most Node or Rails apps plus a database, so realistic hosting starts at the $6-12/mo tiers.
As of January 2026 billing is per-second (minimum 60 seconds), capped at the monthly rate. Managed extras add up fast: managed Postgres starts around $15/mo and backups cost 20-30% of the Droplet price.
