PlanetScale sells managed Postgres and MySQL on fixed-price node sizes rather than metered usage, from a $5/mo single-node Postgres instance. It comes from the team behind Vitess, the sharding layer that ran YouTube-scale MySQL, and offers first-class database branching and a deploy-request workflow for schema migrations.

For a solo founder the draw is predictable node pricing and an operational track record over a free tier. You know the monthly cost up front, and the migration workflow catches bad schema changes before they reach production.

The costs are that there is no free tier at all (it was removed in 2024), so even a dormant project costs $5/mo forever, and the cheapest node is non-HA single node with a fraction of a vCPU.
