Anthropic Claude
A pay-per-token API for the Claude model family, which ranks at the top of most coding and agent benchmarks.
What it actually does
Anthropic sells API access to Claude models, from Haiku 4.5 at $1/$5 per 1M tokens up to Fable 5 and Opus fast mode. You pay per token with no seats or contracts, and new accounts get a small one-time credit but no ongoing free tier.
The line is strongest on coding and agent workloads, which is what many solo founders build, so people pay above commodity rates specifically for output quality on those tasks. Sonnet 5 has an introductory rate of $2/$10 per 1M tokens through August 31, 2026, then rises 50% to $3/$15.
Cost controls stack: cache reads cost 10% of the input price and the Batch API takes another 50% off, and the two combine. Extras are billed separately, including web search at $10 per 1,000 searches and a 1.1x multiplier for US-only inference.

- Leads most coding and agent benchmarks, which is what many solo founders actually build
- Sonnet 5 intro pricing of $2/$10 per 1M tokens is strong value for a frontier model through Aug 31, 2026
- Cache reads at 10% of input and a 50% batch discount stack for large savings on repeated prompts
- Cheapest model (Haiku 4.5 at $1/$5) costs about 5x OpenAI's nano tier and 10x Gemini Flash-Lite
- Sonnet 5 rises 50% to $3/$15 per 1M tokens on September 1, 2026, so the intro price is temporary
- Opus fast mode doubles rates to $10/$50, and web search bills a separate $10 per 1,000 searches

StackTracker tracks what you actually pay for Anthropic Claude and every other tool, flags overpayment, and shows the dollars you would save by switching.
Is it the right tool for you
- Your product is a coding tool or agent workflow where output quality drives value
- You will implement prompt caching to offset the higher base rates
- You want a frontier model at the Sonnet 5 intro price and can budget for the Sept 2026 increase
- You mostly run simple, high-volume tasks where quality is not the bottleneck → use Google Gemini or Groq
- You need the absolute lowest cost per token → use DeepSeek or Alibaba Qwen
